Not sure about the plumbing in your house or apartment?
Well, worry no more, just follow this fine little check list and you’ll know.
- Has your Gas/Oil boiler been serviced in the last 12 months? If not or you cannot remember it, better to be safe than sorry. Get a certified and insured professional to check it.
- Check if your heating system is toped up to the manufacturers recommended level (measured in Bar. There should be water pressure gauge installed on your boiler. Compare the reading with the recommended values in the boilers manual).
- Make sure your Radiators are vented. To do this undo the radiator venting valve and check if water is coming out without any air bursts in the water stream. If air is coming out keep the valve open until only water is coming out (you might need to check step two again if there was a lot of air in the system).
- Check if the heating system is clean and that there is no dirt in it. The thing to look out for is cold spots on your radiators or while venting (see step 3) the radiators you notice that the water is dirty. There is nothing unusual having dirt in the system but it is important to spot the problem early. Since dirt is heavier than water, more energy is required to heat it up and move it around. That will increase your gas bills and reduce the life span of the heat exchanger of your boiler. There are various filters available on the market for this. The filters are reusable, jut remove it, clean it and place it back in the system.
- Check if all the outside pipes are insulated. Also, look out for any defects in the insulation or bare spots. Replace any damaged sections and make sure not to leave any gaps, tape the seams with insulation tape.
- Check if seals around bath and shower cabinet are properly fitted. If there are gaps or the seals are damaged, get a plumber to inspect it.
